Common Hackberry - Celtis occidentalis
Seedling Height: 12-18 in
Common Hackberry is a large native tree found commonly on river terraces and floodplains in southern and central Minnesota. Related to the American elm, it establishes easily and grows well in urban as well as natural landscapes because of its wide soil adaptability and its tolerance of heat, drought, salt spray, wind, ice, and short-term flooding.
The Common Hackberry is medium to fast growing and is 50-70' at maturity with up to a 50' width. Its berry-like fruit is a popular food for birds and small mammalian wildlife.
